Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), under fire from the right for not being tough enough on immigration in his Senate primary race, has called on Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano to dispatch National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. Can't get much more "America, fuck yeah!" than trying to militarize a line spanning four states and surrounded by 12 million people.
In a letter sent to Napolitano's office yesterday, McCain says that rising drug violence across the border in Mexico endangers the lives of American citizens. He says the situation now calls for troops to be sent to the "southern border region."
To our servicepeople's misfortune, we've found that it's impossible to completely secure something as small as a military base with full-time soldiers who are expecting to get attacked.
Which is worse: a politician who knows better cynically offering such an obviously ineffective solution to border security or being one of the willing dupes looking for such "feels good, does little" garbage?
